Local Beans and Rice group to observe Global Youth Service Day in Radford

Members of Beans and Rice Inc., a local AmeriCorps program, will hold a service project today at the Radford Health and Rehab Center.

Celebrating both Global Youth Service Day and Earth Day, Beans and Rice Inc., a local AmeriCorps program, will hold a special day-of-service event today at the Radford Health and Rehab Center.

The event provides local elementary students an opportunity to “give something back” to local senior citizens.

One of many day-of-service events Beans and Rice conducts annually, today’s event will feature staff, AmeriCorps members, volunteers and nearly 30 local school-aged children who will prepare and provide potted flowers to the 83 clients of the local center.

The event will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Beans and Rice Inc. is a community economic development organization that works to improve the economic well-being of low- to moderate-income families through hunger relief, as well as after-school programs that raise academic achievement and develop pro-social skills, micro-business development programs that create jobs and savings programs that help families purchase their first homes and help children save funds for school.
